When did Air Canada start charging for seat selection?

Air Canada started imposing fees for seat selection at check-in on April 24, 2024. Basic and Standard economy fare passengers earlier used to exchange their automatically allocated seat at check-in without paying any fee. The policy came into force for the first time on that day, according to announcements by travel agents.


But following worldwide customer outcry, the company cancelled the fee just two days later on April 26, 2024, on operational grounds—though it promised that they still plans to reinstate it in the future.

What are Air Canada's Basic Economy seats?

Basic Economy seats are the seats offered in Standard Economy without any additional fees. 

Key Features:

  • There is no seat selection in advance; seats are assigned at check-in.

Does Air Canada assign seats based on fare types?

But in some cases, it does allow upgrades.
